They met during a flight to Omaha the year prior after Bailey’s parent’s divorce. These two polar opposites look forward to hanging out and gossiping, especially about a pair who continuously flirt and cozy up to one another. This leads them to make a bet on whether the cozy couple will actually end up dating because they can never be “just friends” (Charlie) or whether that can be proven wrong (Bailey).

But as Charlie realizes he’s fallen for Bailey and developed a crush on her, what makes him even more terrified to admit his feelings is when they agree to a fake relationship in order to disrupt the pleasantries between Bailey’s mom and her new boyfriend. And Bailey soon starts seeing him differently too…

Have the secrets and crushes complicated or doomed these polar opposites before they’ve even realized?

Now without further ado, the cover, illustrated by Liz Casal:

Cover Artist: Liz Casal – Publisher: Simon Teen

When seventeen-year-old Bailey starts a new job at a hotel waterpark, she is less than thrilled to see an old acquaintance is one of her coworkers. Bailey met Charlie a year ago on the long flight to Omaha, where she moved after her parents’ divorce. Charlie’s cynicism didn’t mix well with Bailey’s carefully well-behaved temperament, and his endless commentary was the irritating cherry on top of an already emotionally fraught trip.

Now, Bailey and Charlie are still polar opposites, but instead of everything about him rubbing Bailey the wrong way, she starts to look forward to hanging out and gossiping about the waterpark guests and their coworkers—particularly two who keep flirting with each other. Bailey and Charlie make a bet on whether or not the cozy pair will actually get together. Charlie insists that members of the opposite sex can’t just be friends, and Bailey is determined to prove him wrong.

Bailey and Charlie keep close track of the romantic progress of others while Charlie works to deflect the growing feelings he’s developed for Bailey. Terrified to lose her if his crush becomes known, what doesn’t help his agenda is Bailey and Charlie “fake dating” in order to disrupt the annoying pleasantries between Bailey’s mom and her mom’s new boyfriend.

Soon, what Charlie was hoping to avoid becomes a reality as Bailey starts to see him as not only a friend she can rely on in the midst of family drama—but someone who makes her hands shake and heart race. But Charlie has a secret—a secret that involves Bailey and another bet Charlie may have made. Can the two make a real go of things…or has Charlie’s secret doomed them before they could start?

‘Better Than The Movies’ Sequel Releasing In 2024

On January 20, Lynn Painter announced through Twitter that her NYT Bestselling YA romance Better Than The Movies will be getting a sequel titled Nothing Like The Movies, which is slated for a fall 2024 release!

Initially published in May of 2021, the novel has garnered quite an audience via #Booktok (partly due to the use of rom-com and Taylor Swift references, according to readers) with the hashtag #BetterThanTheMovies acquiring 32.1 million views.

In this “rom-com about rom-coms,” as stated by Junior Library Guild, the novel follows high school senior Liz Buxbaum whose willing to do whatever it takes to win over her crush Michael, after her recently moved back into town. But, when her next-door neighbor and childhood pain Wes Bennett seems to hit it off with Liz’s crush, she realizes her only way to win over Michael involves scheming with her annoying neighbor to make sure he becomes Liz’s prom date. But as she becomes closer to Wes, she slowly starts to reexamine everything she thought she knew about love.

Passionate readers have been eagerly awaiting more of Liz and Wes, especially since during August of 2022, Painter revealed a bonus short story (Better Than The Prom) featuring the couple during a prom scene in the novel.

According to Painter’s thread, she stated “I always said I wouldn’t write a sequel because I like where those silly little love lovers landed, but then an idea popped into my head that I couldn’t shake lose. ALSO – I fell madly in love with Wes’s brain during the bonus chapters and I’m not quite ready to get out of his head.”

The novel will be told in dual POV and set during Liz and Wes’s college summer break. Painter stated more details are to be revealed “soon.” Nothing Like The Movies is available to add on Goodreads.

Liz Buxbaum has always known that Wes Bennett was not boyfriend material. You would think that her next-door neighbor would be a prince candidate for her romantic comedy fantasies, but Wes has only proven himself to be a pain in the butt, ever since they were little. Wes was the kid who put a frog in her Barbie Dreamhouse, the monster who hid a lawn gnome’s severed head in her little homemade neighborhood book exchange.

Flash forward ten years from the Great Gnome Decapitation. It’s Liz’s senior year, a time meant to be rife with milestones perfect for any big screen, and she needs Wes’s help. See, Liz’s forever crush, Michael, has just moved back to town, and—horribly, annoyingly—he’s hitting it off with Wes. Meaning that if Liz wants Michael to finally notice her, and hopefully be her prom date, she needs Wes. He’s her in.

But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz her magical prom moment, she’s shocked to discover that she actually likes being around Wes. And as they continue to grow closer, she must reexamine everything she thought she knew about love—and rethink her own perception of what Happily Ever After should really look like.

‘Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe’ First Look

On September 8, Variety reported that a film adaptation for Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s multi-award-winning LGBTQ+ novel is set to be screened and premiered at Toronto International Film Festival this Friday.

The 2012 YA novel, Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe, follows two Mexican-American teenagers who who form a unique bond after a chance meeting in the summer.

An exclusive clip spotlighting the characters’ first meeting was also revealed, highlighting Ari and Dante bonding over their names.

Aitch Alberto is the screenwriter and director behind the project with Max Pelayo (Ari) and Reese Gonzales (Dante) starring. Kyra Sedgwick and Eugenio Derbez (Ari’s father in the film and well-known Mexican actor), and Lin-Manuel Miranda are high-profile producers attached. Additional cast includes Eva Longoria, Luna Blaise and Kevin Alejandro.

This film marks Alberto’s “feature debut” stated in TIFF’s official film page for Ari & Dante. Financing and production for the adaptation came from Limelight, 3Pas Studios and Big Swing Productions, associated with Boies Schiller Entertainment, as reported by Deadline in 2021 when initial casting was announced.

According to a Publishers Weekly interview from 2021, it was over a 5-year process getting the novel adapted to screen. An exclusive first look still was initially revealed through Twitter during August.

Dante can swim. Ari can’t. Dante is articulate and self-assured. Ari has a hard time with words and suffers from self-doubt. Dante gets lost in poetry and art. Ari gets lost in thoughts of his older brother who is in prison. Dante is fair skinned. Ari’s features are much darker. It seems that a boy like Dante, with his open and unique perspective on life, would be the last person to break down the walls that Ari has built around himself.

But against all odds, when Ari and Dante meet, they develop a special bond that will teach them the most important truths of their lives, and help define the people they want to be. But there are big hurdles in their way, and only by believing in each other―and the power of their friendship―can Ari and Dante emerge stronger on the other side.

Are you looking forward to the Ari and Dante film adaptation?

‘Yolk’ Optioned As A TV Series

As of July 28, Variety reported exclusively that NYT Bestselling author Mary H.K. Choi had the rights to her 2021 contemporary novel Yolk acquired to be adapted into a television series with Picturestart.

The novel follows two estranged sisters, Jayne and June Baek— Jayne is making her way through fashion school in New York City, while her sister June has a high-finance paying job and has never really struggled in her life, until she’s diagnosed with uterine cancer. Now the sisters have to reunite, flung together by circumstances, but get into a messy plot of switching places and committing insurance fraud.

Choi will be adapting her novel for the screenplay alongside Jessica O’Toole (“XOXO Kitty”, “Jane The Virgin”), with O’Toole serving as showrunner.

Executive producers attach to the project include Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart, Samie Kim Falvey, Julia Hammer, Emily Wissink alongside Jermaine Johnson of 3 Arts and Lulu Wang (director of The Farewell) and Dani Melia of Local Time, a newly formed production company.

Feig stated in the article, “Mary is quickly proving herself to be the voice of a generation, applying her keen observational eye to the universal themes of family, identity, and belonging in this peerless coming-of-age story. She’s viciously funny but deeply empathetic at the same time, and the moment we read ‘Yolk,’ we knew it was a series we had to make at Picturestart—and we knew Mary had to be the one to adapt it.”

According to Choi’s Instagram post, she exclaimed, “SO. PUMPED. Also exquisitely in love with this entire team so hard already. I can’t wait to make this so good and so squish and so sob…”

Jayne Baek is barely getting by. She shuffles through fashion school, saddled with a deadbeat boyfriend, clout-chasing friends, and a wretched eating disorder that she’s not fully ready to confront. But that’s New York City, right? At least she isn’t in Texas anymore, and is finally living in a city that feels right for her.

On the other hand, her sister June is dazzlingly rich with a high-flying finance job and a massive apartment. Unlike Jayne, June has never struggled a day in her life. Until she’s diagnosed with uterine cancer.

Suddenly, these estranged sisters who have nothing in common are living together. Because sisterly obligations are kind of important when one of you is dying.

Yolk by Mary H.K. Choi is out now!

First Kill 1st Look & Official trailer premiered for upcoming series releasing with Netflix

On May 5, Netflix unveiled the first look to the 8-episode series First Kill. Then on May 12, Netflix revealed the first official trailer. Inspired by a Victoria Schwab short story of the same name, First Kill was originally published in the 2020 Young Adult vampire anthology edited by Zoraida Córdova titled “Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite.”

The series has been pitched by Netflix as follows: Falling in love is tricky for teens Juliette and Calliope: One’s a vampire, the other’s a vampire hunter — and both are ready to make their first kill.

Imani Lewis stars as Calliope, who comes from a lineage of monster hunters and Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette, a vampire. The two girls, who attend the same high school, soon find themselves drawn to one another and will decide what they’re willing to risk for their first love.  Felicia D. Henderson is the showrunner, executive producer and screenwriter.
