‘Heartstopper’ Netflix Trailer Revealed

On March 16, Netflix dropped the first official teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated series Heartstopper, which has a release date of April 22!

Based on Alice Oseman’s 2018 webcomic, the series has been pitched as following Charlie Spring, Nick Nelson and their circle of friends “navigate the ever-relatable journey of self-discovery and acceptance, supporting each other as they learn to find their most authentic selves.”

The trailer presents Charlie (Joe Locke) and and rugby-playing Nick (Kit Connor) meeting at their secondary school discovering that their new-found friendship blossoms into an unexpected romance. Presenting their lives both in and outside of school, the trailer puts a focus on Charlie, his perspective in addition to that of his friends as he slowly begins falling for Nick.

An exclusive first look of stills from the series we’re posted by Netflix UK & Ireland on Twitter as of March 1.

On March 20, Oseman also revealed the tie-in cover for Volume one of the graphic novel alongside the original photoshoot. According to the thread, the tv tie-in edition will include “some excerpts of the TV scripts…”

Heartstopper’s adaptation will consist eight episodes for the first season, each episode at 30 minutes. Oseman has penned the series as screenwriter with Euros Lyn and production company See-Saw Films behind the project.

Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…?

Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him.

They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…

Heartstopper Optioned As A TV Series For Netflix

On January 20, it was announced that Alice Oseman’s serialized webcomic called Heartstopper was optioned as an eight-part, live-action television series for Netflix.

According to Deadline, Euros Lyn is signed on to direct the project and Oseman’s comic series was picked up by See-Saw Films. Executive producers include Lyn, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman with Zorana Piggott set to produce.

Set to be a half-hour each, Oseman is going to be writing the adaptation.

“I am over the moon that Heartstopper has found a place at Netflix,” said Oseman. “Netflix is totally in support of my and See-Saw’s vision for the show, and I feel incredibly lucky to get to work with a team of passionate, creative people who all adore Heartstopper and want to make it the most beautiful show we can. It’s a joy and an honour to get to re-tell Nick and Charlie’s story for TV and I am so excited to share it not only with Heartstopper’s existing readership, but also a whole new audience around the world.” (quoted in The Hollywood Reporter).

Announced the very same day by casting director Daniel Edwards through Twitter, he stated that there’s currently a casting search for the series.

Kids & Family Content Director Alexi Wheeler, mentioned that Oseman’s series is “just so poignant and beautifully crafted […] When we started to develop the project we collectively decided that Alice had such a clear vision that it would make sense for her to adapt and write the episodes herself; this has paid dividends and we are confident that the 8 episodes we have commissioned will live up to the expectations of existing fans while also engaging a new audience.”

Lyn is known for his work directing episodes of Black Mirror, Doctor Who, and His Dark Materials. Oseman said that she’d been working with See-Saw and the scripts for over a year.

Heartstopper currently has three volumes out with the fourth one being published later this year in May (for the UK). Originally started as a webcomic in September of 2016, Oseman’s series has sold over a quarter million copies.

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender To Be Adapted As A TV Series With Amazon

On August 31, Deadline announced that Kacen Callender’s latest Young Adult Contemporary novel Felix Ever After, is set to be developed into a television series with Amazon Studios.

Callender’s novel which has gotten starred reviews from School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly, tells the story of Felix Love a Black, queer, transgender teen navigating love and identity.

It was also mentioned that the rights to Felix Ever After were picked up by Field Trip Productions. Stephanie Dietz, Director of Development over at Field Trip, will oversee the production.

From Stonewall and Lambda Award-winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time.

Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after.

When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle….

But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.
