‘Love & Gelato’ Film Adaptation Headed To Netflix Summer 2022

On April 27 it was revealed through Netflix that Love & Gelato by NYT Bestselling author Jenna Evans Welch, would be getting the adaptation treatment with a film set to stream on the platform in June!

The streamer has pitched the movie as follows: “Lina is about to graduate high school and has her sights set on her future at MIT. But when her mom gets sick, she encourages Lina to follow in her footsteps and have “the summer of a lifetime” in Rome. Using her mom’s old diary as a guide, she explores the romantic and magical city, where she just might find love… and gelato, of course.”

Cast includes Susanna Skaggs (Lina), Anjelika Washington (Addie), Owen McDonnell as Howard (Lina’s father-type figure & friend of her mother) and Alex Boniello (Fleetwood Zach).

In addition to the film announcement, Netflix’s official blog, Tudum, also revealed an exclusive still of the film featuring Lina (Skaggs) and Addie (Washington) enjoying gelato on the streets of Rome.

As mentioned in Deadline, the project has been directed and written by Brandon Camp, alongside producers Viola Prestieri and Davide Bertoni, shot on location in Italy.

“I made the wrong choice.”

Lina is spending the summer in Tuscany, but she isn’t in the mood for Italy’s famous sunshine and fairy-tale landscape. She’s only there because it was her mother’s dying wish that she get to know her father. But what kind of father isn’t around for sixteen years? All Lina wants to do is go back home.

But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires her, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.

People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more.

Love & Gelato is premiering on Netflix June 22, 2022!
