She’s heading to NYU in the fall with a scarlet U (for “undeclared”) written across her chest. Her parents always remind her that Black kids don’t have the luxury of figuring it out as they go—they have to be 110 percent prepared. But it’s a lot of pressure to be her ancestors’ wildest dreams when Lenore’s not even sure what her dreams are yet.

When her family embarks on a post-graduation Mediterranean cruise, her friend Tessa is sure Lenore’s in for a whirlwind romance. But Lenore knows that doesn’t happen in real life. At least not to girls like her.

Then she meets Alex Lee. After their parents bond over the Cupid Shuffle, she ends up stuck with him for the remainder of the cruise. He’s a hopeless romantic and a golden boy with a ten-year plan. In short, he’s irritating as hell.

But as they get to know each other during the picturesque stops across Europe, he may be able to help her find something else she’s been looking for, even if she doesn’t want to admit it to herself: love.

Beauty And The Besharam by Lillie Vale
Release Date: May 24, 2022

But her plan is shot when she’s cast as Ariel instead of her beloved Belle, and learns that Ian will be her Prince Eric for the summer. [Cue the combative banter.]

Exhausted by Kavya and Ian’s years-long feud, their friends hatch a plan to end their rivalry by convincing them to participate in a series of challenges throughout the summer. Zyla & Kai by Kristina Forest

Zyla and Kai met while working together at an amusement park the previous summer, and they couldn’t have been more different.

Zyla was a cynic about love. She’d witnessed the dissolution of her parents’ marriage early in life, and it left an indelible impression. Her only aim was graduating and going to fashion school abroad. Until she met Kai.

Kai was a serial monogamist and a hopeless romantic. He’d put a temporary pause on his dating life before senior year to focus on school and getting into his dream HBCU. Until he met Zyla.

Alternating between the past and present, we see the love story unfold from Zyla and Kai’s perspectives: how they first became the unlikeliest of friends over the summer, how they fell in love during the school year, and why they ultimately broke up… Or did they?

Interview With A Book Blogger feat. Michelle from @Magical_Reads

Hey 24hr.YABookBlog, creator of The Booked Shelf here! Its a new year which not only means I’m highlighting YA Book News, but also the fantastic bloggers in the bookish community!

I had the opportunity to interview Michelle from MagicalReads7, who brings such a fun energy and enthusiasm to whatever she posts! She reads a variety of genres including contemporary and fantasy, but remains a mostly YA space.

Today marks the first Book Blogger interview of 2022, hopefully to remain a staple alongside all the bookish news here at TBS, enjoy our interview!

Great to have you as a guest on the blog today Michelle! What inspired you to start a book blog and how has the journey been so far?

Michelle: Thanks for having me! I’m honored to be a part of your interviews. I started a book blog mostly because one day I decided to write book reviews and wanted a platform to post all of them. My journey has been pretty typical honestly; starting my blog has helped me connect a lot more with authors and other bloggers.

You launched the ‘Author Of Color’ Awards to give writers of color (particularly YA) more recognition, which is such a wonderful project that I noticed you launched in 2019! Can you talk more about what inspired this and more of your process for putting it together each year?

Michelle: I started these awards on a whim (during the busiest part of my semester lmao) partially to procrastinate and mostly because I was fed up with the nominees for the Goodreads Choice Awards. As much as I know that those nominees are chosen by statistics, it was painful and frankly infuriating to see the pattern of how certain books were nominated. I wanted to give more recognition to books by authors of color because of how disproportionately they were represented as nominees, and I focused on YA books because I’m primarily a YA blogger!

↪ You can view the 2021 Results HERE

On your blog you feature such varying amounts of content from reviews to interviews, weekly memes, discussions, fun lists, etc. Which is your favorite kind of post and can you share your process for creating them?

Michelle: My favorite kinds of posts are actually my discussion posts! Creating book rec lists is fun too but so time consuming (putting together the list itself, formatting the post, etc.). Discussion posts are basically a way for me to write 1000 words on a random topic and unload my mostly unfiltered thoughts.

Can you recommend some of your favorite books & what you love about them so much?

Michelle: Oh, it’s so difficult to choose just a few…I love Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta; frankly, all of her books have such a close place in my heart, as do Emma Mills’s books, particularly Foolish Hearts. I honestly could not tell you why I emotionally attach to certain books, but once I do, I usually reread them constantly.

I’ve noticed quite a number of lists on your blog too! Which one did you enjoy creating the most & why?

Michelle: I love the emoji series where you can click on an emoji and I’ll give you a release from a certain month of the year. It’s a fun way for me to match books to emojis and allows for a certain personalization for the people reading the list.

A staple for many book bloggers are reviews! Can you share some of your favorites that you’ve written on Magical Reads?

Michelle: Some of my favorite reviews that I’ve written are for These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, A Pho Love Story by Loan Le, Yolk by Mary H.K. Choi, Cloudwish by Fiona Wood, Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills, and The Gilded Wolves and The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi.

What kinds of stories and genres do you love reading the most?

Michelle: I used to be a huge fantasy reader, but over the past couple of years, I’ve been more into contemporary. I love stories where I instantly connect to the protagonist/characters no matter the genre though!

What inspires you as a content creator?

Michelle: People interacting with my posts and finding new books inspires me! I love when people @ me to tell me they found a new recommendation from me.

Any difficulties or challenges you’ve faced as a book blogger and how did you overcome them?

Michelle: Personally, I’ve gone through a few blogging slumps where I’m burned out and never feel like working on my blog. These usually pass; I try to still write posts but not as often to give myself a break. I think it’s important to know that, if you’re not enjoying it, you can and should take a break!

Favorite part about being a book blogger?

Michelle: This sounds so braggy but I like getting ARCs and getting to read books early because it helps me hype the book more before its release. While you can still promote the book early without reading it, I’ve found that it’s easier when you’ve already read it so you can talk about specifics.

Any other interests you have outside of blogging?

Michelle: I used to play the piano and will still randomly sit down and play for a bit. I also watch and rewatch a lot of TV shows. During quarantine, I meant to get into embroidery but that didn’t quite pan out…

Thank you Michelle for sharing about yourself as a book blogger & highlighting your work in the bookish community!

Michelle (Magical Reads) is a book reader, reviewer, and blogger. She’s a college student who can usually be found reading instead of studying.

The Booked Shelf Content (Reader Survey)

Hey, it’s The Booked Shelf here! For a bit of background I started this blog in the summer of 2019 to highlight all the YA Book news out there!

Flashforward to 2021, TBS is still going strong! However, with lots of book news to cover and the blog being run by only one person (me!) it can be a bit of a struggle as you can see over these past few months to write about all the latest bookish news out there.

That’s why I’m asking you, reader of my blog to let me know what kind of posts do you like to see and what should I prioritize? Hearing your feedback would truly motivate me to get more news out there if I know what readers are interested in seeing.

Down below will be a few survey questions of different kinds of content and posting schedules. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on all the things about TBS that you enjoy and perhaps where I can improve? I’ll do my best to take all opinions to heart and work to continue bringing stellar book news articles!

*This post may or may not be deleted after some time to keep the blog feed neat, but without a doubt, I’ll be keeping track of all your feedback! Thanks for reading!!

Pistouvi by Merwan and Bertrand Gatignol Graphic Novel Preview

Today on The Booked Shelf is a special preview for a new Young Adult fantasy graphic novel set to be released this fall with Magnetic Press, Pistouvi!

Pistouvi is pitched as a “magnificent, lyrical fable” that follows a girl named Jeanne and her best friend, a little fox named Pistouvi. The art will be in black and white, while the storytelling itself evokes a dark and whimsical atmosphere.

The two friends are inseparable, however adulthood causes them to slowly drift apart and Pistuovi is suffering from the pull of a flock of babbling mockingbirds. This graphic novel is about the transition from childhood to adulthood, tinged with disillusionment.

The author is Merwan and illustrator is Bertrand Gatignol.

The official book trailer launched today on August 31, which can be found on the publisher’s YouTube here.

Magnetic Press is an imprint of Lion Forge. Pistouvi was originally published in France of 2011.

Childhood should last forever…

Jeanne is a little girl who lives with a mischievous young fox named Pistouvi. They share a charming little treehouse surrounded by a magical prairie tended by a giant ‘tractor-man’ and the wind-spirit he loves.

Together, Jeanne and Pistouvie spend frolicking days without a care, but soon, the birds arrive and everything changes…

A magnificent, lyrical fable about the transition from childhood to the world of adults.

Blessed Monsters by Emily A. Duncan Cover Reveal

On June 26, Wednesday Books revealed the cover to the finale of Emily A. Duncan’s Something Dark And Holy Trilogy titled, Blessed Monsters.

There was a video shown through Twitter which featured the previous series covers, leading up to the cover/title reveal for Blessed Monsters.

Duncan shared some hints as to what readers can expect in the final book stating “swamp zombies…big spiders…a whole lot of messes that need to be cleaned up,” and more.

Wicked Saints is a dark fantasy which follows Nadya, a girl who can speak to the gods as she finds a way to work with a deadly adversary to turn the tide of the war and assassinate a king.

The cover designer is Olga Grlic and artist is Mark McCoy.

When Nadya prays to the gods, they listen, and magic flows through her veins. For nearly a century the Kalyazi have been locked in a deadly holy war with Tranavian heretics, and her power is the only thing that is a match for the enemy’s blood magic. But when the Travanian High Prince, and his army invade the monastery she is hiding in, instead of saving her people, Nadya is forced to flee the only home she’s ever known, leaving it in flames behind her, and vengeance in her heart.

As night falls, she chooses to defy her gods and forge a dangerous alliance with a pair of refugees and their Tranavian blood mage leader, a beautiful, broken boy who deserted his homeland after witnessing his blood cult commit unthinkable monstrosities. The plan? Assassinate the king and stop the war.

But when they discover a nefarious conspiracy that goes beyond their two countries, everything Nadya believes is thrown into question, including her budding feelings for her new partner. Someone has been harvesting blood mages for a dark purpose, experimenting with combining Tranavian blood magic with the Kalyazi’s divine one. In order to save her people, Nadya must now decide whether to trust the High Prince – her country’s enemy – or the beautiful boy with powers that may ignite something far worse than the war they’re trying to end.

The sequel to Serpent & Dove, titled Blood & Honey is set to be released on September 1, 2020!

For her sixteenth birthday, Louise le Blanc’s mother gave her three things: a sacrificial altar, a ritual knife, and a wicked scar.

Lou’s death would have ended the ancient war between the Church and witches, but Lou refuses to become a martyr. Forsaking her coven, she escapes to the gloomy city of Cesarine and hides her magic as a thief in the criminal underworld. But life in Cesarine has its own dangers. Huntsmen roam the city revered as holy men. Witches burn without trial. And the Archbishop, the Church’s austere patriarch, revels in violence.

As a huntsman, Reid Diggory lives by one verse: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

He’s devoted his entire life to eradicating the occult and making his surrogate father, the Archbishop, proud. Finally given the chance to capture a witch of his own, Reid is devastated when a foul-mouthed thief thwarts him—and doubly devastated when she too disappears. Hell-bent on bringing her to justice, Reid vows she won’t escape again. But when Lou tricks him into public scandal trying to avoid capture, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.

Marriage to a huntsman could provide real protection from the witches—if Lou can convince Reid she isn’t one herself. The secret proves difficult to keep as Lou begins practicing magic in secret within the heart of the Church, determined to prepare for her mother’s inevitable return. As time passes, however, Lou discovers yet another danger lurking: her own growing feelings for her husband. But Reid is still dangerous. He’s just as likely to tie her to the stake as defend her if he learns her true identity. With enemies closing in—and more than her own life at stake—Lou must decide who she can trust before it’s too late…and she’s not the only one with a secret.
