Witchlands TV Series Gets Director and Showrunners

On October 24, Susan Dennard announced through her Twitter and Instagram that there were new additions to the team behind the adaptation for her Witchlands series, starting with Truthwitch!

Dennard revealed that the Witchlands adaptation has a director, writers, and showrunners. The director is set to be Alice Waddington, where Julie Benson and Shawna Benson are showrunners and screenwriters.

The Witchlands series follows young witches Safiya and Iseult who live on a continent ruled by three empires. Everyone is born with a distinct magical skill called a “witchery.” The continent is also on the edge of war as a Twenty Year Truce is about to end.

Originally announced in September of 2018, this is a major update as it was first reported that the Jim Henson Company optioned the novels for a live-action television series.

Dennard mentioned in her Instagram post, “I could not be more excited by what they have planned.” Even mentioning that she’s seen concept and costume art. Additionally she also shared that the script is “both hilarious and action-packed,” while also being “faithful to the characters and world.” She ensure readers that they can “trust the books are in great hands.”

In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.

Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.

Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she’s a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden – lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult’s true powers are hidden even from herself.

In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls’ heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.
