Broken Wish by Julie C. Dao Cover Reveal

As of April 13, Entertainment Weekly revealed the cover, alongside the excerpt to the first book of a fairy tale Disney quartet starting with Broken Wish by Julie C. Dao.

Disney’s quartet titled The Mirror Series, will follow “an intricate family curse and will move through generations and across continents from book to book.”

Dao’s novel plans to be a new spin on Snow White’s Evil Queen legend. Broken Wish is going to center around “16-year-old Elva, a witch who must hide her strange powers and visions. But when Elva accidentally witnesses a devastating vision of the future, she decides she has to do everything she can to prevent it.”

Each book is going to be written by a different YA author, set during different generations. Alongside Dao, authors include Dhonielle Clayton, J. C. Cervantes, and L.L. McKinney.

The series plans to travel from 1800s Germany to 1920s New Orleans, 1960s San Francisco, and early 2000s New York City.

When asked about being a part of this project Dao told EW,“I’ve been a Disney kid my whole life, and getting to write Broken Wish for Disney felt like coming full circle! I hope readers will love kind, courageous Elva and prickly, warm-hearted Mathilda as much as I do.”

Dao also mentioned that her jaw dropped when she saw the cover. Broken Mirror‘s cover features a “dreamy Sleeping Beauty-like vibe, the dark forest, the red slippers, and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details like the cottage and the woman’s face.”

Sixteen-year-old Elva has a secret. She has visions and strange powers that she will do anything to hide. She knows the warnings about what happens to witches in their small village of Hanau. She’s heard the terrible things people say about the Witch of the North Woods, and the malicious hunts that follow.

But when Elva accidentally witnesses a devastating vision of the future, she decides she has to do everything she can to prevent it. Tapping into her powers for the first time, Elva discovers a magical mirror and its owner—none other than the Witch of the North Woods herself. As Elva learns more about her burgeoning magic, and the lines between hero and villain start to blur, she must find a way to right past wrongs before it’s too late.

Broken Wish by Julie C. Dao is set to be released October 6, 2020!
